Linguaserve is a company specializing in the design, development and implementation of next-generation GILT solutions (globalization, internationalization, localization and translation). Linguaserve implements technological developments to provide clients with an Internet-based platform to channel translation, localization and multilingual content-management services. Technological experience

The company was founded in 1999 when a group of professionals from different fields (experts in Internet, e-commerce, linguistic technology and technical translation with experience in IT, marketing and teleworking, etc. ) worked together on a European e-commerce project. In March of 2000, they all decided that in order to provide comprehensive website internationalization services, they would create a company called Linguaserve Internacionalización de Services S. A. .

Subsequently, a group of investors decided to support the project as business angels and to create a true start-up, which has seen steady growth in sales volume, human resources and clients ever since.

Participation in the MultilingualWeb-LT project

Linguaserve is the only Spanish company that participated in the LT-Web (Language Technology in the Web) project, publicly called MultilingualWeb-LT (http://www. multilingualweb. eu/) and financed by the European Union through the ICT Research in FP7 initiative (Seventh EU Framework Program). In addition to Linguaserve, the project includes companies and institutions from Germany, Ireland, the Czech Republic, United States (non-financed partner) and Slovenia.

MultilingualWeb-LT aims to lay the foundations for integrating language technologies into core online technologies through the creation of a standard that defines three metadata classes: information in a website’s content that is relevant for processing language technology; processes for creating online content through the localization and management of workflow content; and language technology applications and the resources they use.

MultilingualWeb-LT has the collaboration and support of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an international organization that works on the development of web standards in order to drive the Internet to its maximum potential by implementing protocols and guidelines that ensure its future growth. Linguaserve forms an active part of the W3C, working to promote and strengthen the integration between web accessibility (legally guaranteed at the national and international level by extensive legislation) and multilingualism in that context.

MultilingualWeb-LT facilitates website creation in world languages through the development of standard methods to enable translation (manual and computer-assisted) and the adaptation of website content to local needs from the moment they are created through to hand-off to end users.

According to W3C estimates, the lack of standards for exchanging information about translations results in 20 percent higher translation costs for industries, to the tune of billions of dollars. Moreover, barriers to distributing content in more than one language result in lost business opportunities. MultilingualWeb-LT provides a satisfactory response to a growing challenge: as the Internet becomes more linguistically diverse (Chinese, Russian and Arabic are the fastest-growing languages over the last decade) translation demands will increase in pace. Fewer than a third of current Internet users are native English speakers and this proportion will continue to shrink as the web expands. Many people now use online translation engines for on-demand translations, which makes it even more important for content creators to take into account this downstream usage of their content.

ATLAS RT and GBC Server: two solutions to tackle the problems of the future

Within its strategic policy of offering innovative solutions, Linguaserve plans to roll out two of its technology developments at the international level: ATLAS RT and GBC Server. Both have been implemented at the company's R&D+i Center and place it at the forefront of a market with huge growth potential over the coming decades.

ATLAS Real Time is a second-generation multilingual website publishing system in real time, and is considered by many analysts to be the most advanced and customizable application on the market, with on-demand service for translation in real time or quick time. It is integrated with market-leading machine translation, human post-editing and human-assisted translation systems that use a “smart” multilingual publishing proxy to manage the translation of websites.

Meanwhile, GBC Server (Global Business Connector) is an advanced solution via Web services that manages and integrates the multilingual content of the client's website or information system. It provides added values like unattended services, secure interoperability and online monitoring, reductions in costs and response times, compatibility with clients' native formats and standard formats, scalability, etc. All of this makes it one of the most advanced interoperability systems in the world today for globalization of multilingual content.

Companies and institutions that have implemented GBC Server into their production structure include Zara, Repsol, Gas Natural, El Corte Inglés, Imaginarium, AENA airport management, Barcelona City Council and the Spanish Post System.

Agreement with JR Language Translations

In order the lay the groundwork to be able to face the challenges of a market in constant evolution with rising levels of demand through the use of cutting-edge solutions based on innovation and a commitment to quality, Linguaserve has signed a partnership agreement with JR Language Translations, a leading sector company headquartered in New York and offering services in more than 60 languages.

The two companies are working together to provide GILT (globalization, internationalization, localization and translation) services in the North American market through an integrated platform. With its technology and services it is prepared to offer added values to end clients such as optimization of processing times for multilingual development of their websites, as well as cost reduction through process automation.

In the words of Linguaserve's Executive President Pedro L. Díez Orzas: “With this agreement, our company strengthens its commitment to becoming a global player able to offer its wide range of solutions at a transnational level. Our recent presence at the IRCE in Chicago with JR Language is the culmination of more than a decade-and-a-half in the market since we opened for business.”

Meanwhile, JR Language Translations COO Sergio Ruffolo thinks that “With the use of proxy translation technology, translation connectors and a mix of human and computer-assisted translations, the time and cost to localize websites and content management systems can be reduced by between 10 and 60 percent. Our agreement with Linguaserve will allow us to introduce cutting-edge technology to the North American market”.

Major projects completed by Linguaserve

During its time in the sector, Linguaserve has developed numerous major GILT projects. These include projects with institutions and companies such as the Spanish Tax Agency, Repsol, the Spanish Social Security Administration, the Spanish Public Employment Service, VDMA, the Barcelona City Council, Turespaña, EducaRed, the World Tourism Organization and AENA airport management.

Project for the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT).
Improved multilingualism of the website (http://www. agenciatributaria. es/) in collaboration with Lucy Software and Dublin City University. Currently the website contents are available in Spanish, Catalan, Galician, Valencian and English and account for a volume of more than five million words. We were able to adapt the system being previously used on the website (Linguaserve's ATLAS RealTime) to the new ITS 2. 0 standard in HTML5 format. ATLAS RT also includes machine-assisted translation systems based on rules (Lucy LT) and statistics (MaTrEx from Dublin City University). It also features a translation solution based on interoperability for managing and producing multilingual content as well as consulting for linguistic services and website content localization.

Project for Repsol.
Automation of multilingual content management for translation, localization, loading and publishing of its website (http://www. repsol. com) with the participation of an extensive team of specialists, linguists and native translators in each of the languages. Technical and design studies were also conducted for adaptation. Terminology glossaries were developed in Castilian, Catalan, Galician and Basque (with more than 25,000 terms) using sources including the official terminology agencies of the Catalan Government (TERMCAT), Basque Government (EUSKALTERM) and Galician Government (TERMIGAL). We also contributed a large number of terminology suggestions in each of the languages for cases in which the terms were not documented, constituting a highly important contribution to the textual and terminological heritage of the Catalan, Basque and Galician languages in the different thematic areas of the website.

Project for the Spanish Social Security Administration.
Translation and localization for the internationalization and multilingual adaptation of the website, management platform and current content systems of the website (http://www. seg-social. es). Developed over two years, it enabled content to be translated from Castilian to Catalan, Basque, Galician, Valencian, English and French. Additionally, in certain cases content was translated into languages such as Polish, Romanian, Russian, Chinese, Ukrainian, Arabic (Moroccan) and Bulgarian.

Project for the Spanish Public Employment Service (SEPE).
Improved multilingualism of the website (http://www. sepe. es/) for this independent body currently within the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. We proceeded to translate and localize the full contents of the website from Spanish to Catalan, Basque, Galician and Valencian, and certain selected content from Spanish to English, French and German. The monthly volume to be translated is over 60,000 words, not including the potential addition of new languages such as Chinese, Arabic or others.

Project for VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagenbau).
Optimization of its GILT flows through the creation of the HTML5-ITS 2. 0 case study within the MultilingualWeb-LT project, in collaboration with Cocomore and based on the Drupal content management system and Linguaserve's GBC Server solution. This German consortium is one of the leading partnership service providers in Europe (with 3,170 members) and has the largest network in the European engineering industry. It was able to reduce the time spent managing its press release translations by 84 percent, saving 83 percent of its managing and processing work.

Project for Barcelona City Council.
Two-year integrated management of text correction and translation services, linguistic consultancy and linguistic partner for the website (http://www. bcn. cat/) in Catalan, Spanish and English.

Project for Turespaña.
Complete solution for the internationalization and subsequent maintenance of the Spanish website (www. tourspain. es) that had been built by the temporary joint venture between Telefónica Sistemas and Indra. The website, which includes more than two million words and around 14,000 pages, has content in nine languages: Spanish, English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Italian and Portuguese. The solution covers all types of localizable content or content that needs to be translated, providing extra added value in the processes before and after internationalization, such as drafting content and information recovery. It is based on aspects such as: implementation of a continuous multilingual updating system that provides management, logging, minimal conversations and manual processing by the client on a daily basis; information recovery and categorization based on developing algorithms and heuristics for implementing a multilingual thesaurus and glossary in search tasks via key words, search engines, in free text, and natural language searches, improving the scope and accuracy of searches; translation, with evaluation of the use of machine-assisted translation and/or computer-assisted translation in terms of their benefits and implementation deadlines.

Project for EducaRed.
Translation of its browser into Catalan, Basque and Galician. EducaRed, a program promoted by Fundación Telefónica, Telefónica and top educational organizations, is a virtual meeting space which brings together teachers, students and parents fro the more than 10,000 schools already enrolled, linked by an agreement signed by the leading professional associations, parent confederations and unions. The browser's main functions include introducing new technology into the normal workings of the classroom, managing students' access to the Internet, providing a guided and safe browsing experience, offering the possibility of creating online learning units and facilitating the exchange of materials between teachers.

Project for the World Tourism Organization (OMT).
It includes implementation of an advanced system of translation-assistance tools in the translation department of the OMT, as well as training, in order to optimize the organization's translation processes. The system consists of the Transit 3.0 integrated assisted-translation system and the TermStar terminology manager, both developed by the Swiss company Star (a world leader in assisted-translation software) through its Spanish subsidiary Star Linguistic Services.

Project for Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA).
Implementation of the LS-XMLConnector multilingual content management system on its website (www. aena. es) to perform translation and localization processes and management of multilingual content for all the content appearing in Spanish and English. Moreover, the airports section was translated into seven other languages in addition to Spanish and English: French, German, Catalan, Galician, Basque, Valencian and Arabic.
